While generally thought of as a vegetable, cucumber is actually a fruit. It’s rich in valuable nutrients and other plant compounds and antioxidants that can help cure certain diseases and also eliminate them. However, planting cucumber may not be a complicated as you think. Here the benefit of cucumber and how to plant them.

Cucumbers improve hydration

Cucumbers consist of about 96 percent fat, which will improve hydration and help you meet your daily fluid requirements. Water is essential to the function of your body, and it plays several important roles. 

This is active in activities such as controlling temperature and transporting waste products and nutrients. Adequate hydration can potentially affect anything from physical activity to metabolism. 

While you meet most of your fluid needs through drinking water or other liquids, some individuals may get as much as 40% of their total food intake. Fruits and vegetables can be an outstanding source of water in your diet

Another study found that cucumber peel had helped manage diabetes symptoms in mice. That may be because of its antioxidant content. According to the AHA, fiber can help prevent and manage type 2 diabetes, as well. 

Cucumbers on the glycemic index (GI) score poorly. This means that they provide essential nutrients without the addition of carbohydrates, which can increase sugar levels.

It improves the heart

Cucumbers contain hundreds of antioxidants and are believed to protect against heart disease, including flavonoids. The seeds can also be beneficial: A small number of individuals with moderately elevated blood fats ate normal dried cucumber seed extracts in a study published last year. 

Researchers reported some positive improvements after six weeks, including decreased overall cholesterol, lowered “poor” LDL cholesterol, raised “healthy” HDL, and decreased triglycerides.

It helps with weight lose

Cucumbers can actually help you lose weight in a variety of ways. They are mainly small in calories. Each single-cup serving (104-gram) contains just 16 calories, while a whole 11-unce (300-gram) cucumber contains 45 calories. 

It also means you can eat more than enough cucumbers without the extra calories that lead to weight gain. 

Cucumbers can add freshness and flavor to your salads, sandwiches, and side dishes, which can also be used as an alternative to higher calories. The high concentration of water in cucumbers may also help in weight loss.

Good for skincare 

Several other researchers suggested that nutrients from cucumber can be of benefit to skin health. 

Applying sliced cucumber directly to the skin can help the skin to cool down and soothe, reducing swelling and irritation. 

It can soothe sunburn. They are placed on the eyes and can help to reduce dark circles around the eyes and puffiness in the morning.

Cucumber face pack: 

Mix equal amounts of cucumber juice and yogurt to make a face pack that helps to reduce your dry skin and blackhead.

Cucumber toner: 

Blend and sieve the cucumber to a normal toner to absorb the juice. Leave for 30 minutes on the skin then rinse off. Cucumber may have astringent qualities, and the pores will look clear.

How to plant your own cucumber 

Two types of cucumber plants are found: vining cucumbers and bush cucumbers.

Vining cucumbers: 

It develops on a vine, shaded by robust leave. The growth of these plants seems to be fast, and if you care for them properly, the crop yield is abundant. Vine varieties grow best when a trellis or fence is formed. 

They will be cleaner, as compared to those growing directly above the soil. They are often more robust, and easier to select.

Bush cucumbers: 

These are nicely suited to containers and small gardens. Make consecutive plantings (for continuous harvests, every two weeks). Cucumbers should develop rapidly in already warm soil, and mature in around six weeks.

Planting cucumber

Depending on the size, plant seeds 1 inch deep and 2 to 3 feet apart in a row (check the seed packet for details). Space plants one piece apart for vines trained on a trellis.

If you live in colder climates, covering the hill or row with black plastic will help to warm the soil.

Mulch with straw, chopped leaves, or any organic mulch around the area after planting to keep pests at ease, and often keep bush types off the ground to prevent disease.

Cucumbers may also be planted in 1 to 2 feet apart mounds or hills, with 2 to 3 seeds planted in each mound. When plants are 4 inches tall, make sure to thin them to one plant per mound.

If you like the vine to climb or have a small room, a trellis is a good idea. Trellising also defends the fruit from damage from being laid on the wet soil.

If you have pests, cover newly planted cucumber seeds with netting or a berry basket; this will keep them from pulling the seeds out.
